On July 9, 2019, the District of Utah's Facilities Security Committee voted unanimously to amend the existing District policy governing liquids in the courthouses. Beginning Monday, July 22, 2019, visitors and guests to the United States Courthouse and the Frank E. Moss United States Courthouse will not be permitted to bring any liquids, aerosols, or gels into the courthouses.
Visitors and guests attempting to enter with prohibited items will be asked to dispose of them in trash receptacles outside the courthouses. Empty water bottles will be permitted, and water will remain available at numerous drinking fountains throughout the courthouses. In addition, visitors to the United States Courthouse may purchase beverages at Roula’s Cafe or from the 6th floor vending machines. Visitors to the Frank E. Moss United States Courthouse may purchase beverages from vending machines located in the basement snack bar area. Visitors who leave with a beverage obtained inside the courthouse will not be permitted to reenter with it.
The Lead Court Security Officers are authorized to make exceptions if a prohibited item is determined to be necessary for child care, medical, or other special needs. Visitors should advise a Court Security Officer at the screening station if assistance is required.
Court employees and employees of other building tenants who display their building access cards are exempt from this policy. Petit and grand jurors who check in with the Court Security Officers are also exempt from this policy.
The courts recognize that this policy change may result in some inconvenience to visitors and guests, especially lawyers, members of the media, and others who regularly access the courts. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we modify our courthouses security policy to ensure the safety of our court staff and those who visit our federal courts.
